Baobab Oil for Hair: Growth, Benefits & How to Use It

Healthy hair growth starts with what you feed it. Your scalp and strands rely on a steady supply of vitamins, fatty acids and antioxidants, and few natural oils deliver them as generously as baobab. Cold-pressed from the seeds of the iconic baobab tree, our oil comes from Ghana in West Africa, where the fruit has been used for generations to nourish hair and skin. Everything your hair needs, from one single ingredient.

Is baobab oil good for hair?

Yes, baobab oil is one of the best all-round natural hair oils available. Healthy growth starts beneath the surface, at the follicle, and everything your hair becomes depends on the environment you create for it. This is where baobab hair oil excels. It works in three main ways:

It nourishes the scalp:
Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp. A dry, flaky or irritated scalp can disrupt the follicles and lead to weaker growth and more shedding. Baobab oil helps soothe dryness and supports the scalp's natural moisture barrier, giving follicles their best environment to thrive.

It reduces breakage: Much of what people experience as "my hair won't grow" is actually hair growing normally but breaking off before it gains length. Baobab oil coats and conditions the hair fiber, improving elasticity and reducing snapping at the ends. Less breakage means more visible length over time.

It protects against free radical damage:
Baobab is one of the richest natural sources of antioxidants, which help defend the scalp and hair against everyday oxidative stress from sun, pollution and heat styling.

The nutrients that do the work

Baobab oil's benefits come from its very well-rounded nutrient profile. We independently test the nutritional content of our baobab oil, so the nutrients below are not just claims borrowed from a textbook, they are what is actually in the bottle.

Omega fatty acids (3, 6 and 9): Baobab oil contains a near even balance of oleic and linoleic acids. Oleic acid penetrates the hair shaft to soften and condition from within, while linoleic acid supports the scalp's barrier function and helps balance sebum. This balance is why baobab oil feels nourishing without being heavy or greasy.

Vitamin A: Supports healthy sebum production, your scalp's own natural conditioner.

Vitamin C: Plays a role in collagen production, the protein that keeps the skin your follicles live in firm and healthy, while adding to the oil's antioxidant strength.

Vitamin D: A genuine rarity. Very few plant oils naturally contain vitamin D, and research suggests it plays a role in the hair follicle cycle. Baobab is one of the few that delivers it.

Vitamin E: A well-known antioxidant for scalp and hair, shown in research to support scalp health when applied topically.

Vitamins F and K: Vitamin F is another name for the essential fatty acids above, and vitamin K supports overall skin health, rounding out one of the most complete vitamin profiles of any plant oil.

Antioxidants: As one of the richest natural sources of antioxidants, baobab helps protect both the scalp and the hair fiber from environmental damage.

Baobab oil absorbs quickly and does not leave a greasy film, which means it suits far more hair types than heavier oils like castor or coconut. These nutrients are not just good for hair either. You can read about the full range of baobab health benefits in our complete guide.

How to use baobab oil for hair growth

Baobab oil is simple to use daily. There are five easy ways to work it into your routine, from a two-minute scalp massage to a full treatment night:

1. Scalp massage (the most important one):

Warm 3 to 5 drops of baobab oil between your fingertips and massage into your scalp in small circles for 3 to 5 minutes. The massage itself stimulates blood flow to the follicles, and the oil nourishes the scalp as you go. Do this 2 to 3 times per week, either on damp hair after washing or on dry hair before bed.

2. Pre-wash treatment:

Apply a generous amount through your scalp and lengths 30 to 60 minutes before washing. This protects the hair fiber from the drying effect of shampoo and leaves it softer after the wash. Ideal once a week.

3. Hot oil treatment:

Place your bottle of baobab oil in a cup of warm (not hot) water for a few minutes, then apply from scalp to ends. Cover with a shower cap and leave for 30 minutes before shampooing out. This is the most intensive option and makes the biggest difference to dry, damaged or chemically treated hair. Once a fortnight is plenty.

4. Leave-in for ends and frizz:

Rub 1 to 2 drops between your palms and smooth over damp or dry ends. This seals in moisture, tames frizz and protects the oldest, most fragile part of your hair from breakage. Safe to do daily.

5. Boost your conditioner:

Add a few drops of baobab oil to your usual conditioner or hair mask in your palm before applying.

Which hair types is baobab oil best for?

Fine or oily hair

Lightweight, it absorbs fast and nourishes hair without weighing it down. A drop or two through the mid-lengths and ends is all you need.

Curly, coily and textured hair

The omega fatty acids help seal moisture into the hair fiber, defining curls and reducing frizz. Baobab oil works well as the oil step in an LOC or LCO routine.

Dry, damaged or colour-treated hair

The vitamins and fatty acids help restore softness and elasticity, and the antioxidant content helps protect colour-treated hair from environmental stress.

Sensitive scalps

Baobab oil has no known side effects and is gentle enough for sensitive skin.

How often should you use it?

Consistency matters more than quantity. A few drops used regularly will do more than a heavy application once a month. For most people, the ideal routine looks like this:

  • Scalp massage: 2 to 3 times per week
  • Leave-in on the ends: daily or as needed
  • Pre-wash or hot oil treatment: once a week or fortnight
What results can you realistically expect?

Within the first few uses: softer, smoother hair with less frizz and a healthy shine.

Within 4 to 8 weeks: a calmer, more comfortable scalp, noticeably less breakage and split ends, and hair that feels stronger.

Within 3 to 6 months of consistent use: many people notice their hair holding more length and looking fuller, since less of it is being lost to breakage and the scalp is in better condition.

Hair grows roughly 1 to 1.5 centimetres per month on average, and no topical oil changes that underlying rate. What baobab oil does is help you keep the length you grow, which over months adds up to a real, visible difference.
