Our baobab isn't farmed, it's harvested. Our baobab trees grow wild across the Ghanaian savannah, exactly as they have for thousands of years, with no planting, no irrigation and no pesticides. Baobab is also the only fruit in the world that naturally dehydrates on the tree, so no drying agents or chemicals are ever needed to preserve it. The fruit is simply harvested and sieved into powder, while the seeds are cold-pressed into our baobab oil. Organic by nature, and backed by independent pesticide residue testing.
We've established direct partnerships with exceptional harvesting communities in Ghana who prioritise the long-term wellbeing of baobab trees and their surrounding ecosystems, which remains one of our top priorities as a retailer. Women lead our supply chain at nearly every step. Our harvest managers are all women, many of our harvesters are mothers, and Organic Baobab itself is female-founded here in Australia. We ensure our harvesters receive fair compensation for their hard work, which means they don't have to travel for hours from their homes each day in search of more work, and it gives more families the opportunity to afford an education for their children. This is sadly not standard industry practice, as most other superfoods are sourced via a reseller that keeps most of the profits and cannot guarantee the sustainability or ethics of the produce.
What makes our sourcing different:
Before we sold a single bag, our founder Eli spent over two years sourcing, testing and scientifically grading baobab from more than 35 suppliers around the world. The baobab from Ghana stood out on every count. The fruit pulp was light and tangy, the cold-pressed oil was silky, and independent testing puts its vitamin C at 410mg per 100g, one of the highest of any baobab powder available today. We still work with those same harvesting communities today.
